2002 - A trip round the south island

This gallery features a collecting of images that I took while travelling round the south island. The basic route involved crossing Cook Strait by ferry then hitchhiking through to Nelson. From there I hitched to the West coast and slowly made my way as far south as Greymouth before catching the train through the mountains to Christchurch.

Houses
Houses
As our train laboured its way East we passed through a number of small, derelict communities that sprung up while the line was being laid, many years before. This particular location is particularly cold and damp with high mountains closing in all about.

Waimakariri Crossing
Waimakariri Crossing
The mountains gave way to the Canterbury planes and we crossed the mighty waimakariri riverbed. Back up to wards the mountains and the rivers source the braided streams catch the last of the days light.

West Coast
West Coast
Rugged beaches and rough seas are the trademark of the West, this place being no exception. The coast surrounding the pancake rocks is harsh and unforgiving, battered by wind and waves the bare rock offers little or no protection.

Moving Mountain
Moving Mountain
On all sides the towering mountains were being diminished by distance and the progress of the train. The wide open spaces unfolded from the roots of the mountain and we raced forward, eagre and excited with the possibilities.
