Steps to improve default ubuntu installation
No doubt Ubuntu is an awesome system but the out of the box installation is not for everyone.
Here is my list of adjustments that I perform to improve the base install.

I shaved 47% (17 seconds) off my boot up time by upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04. I was a little concerned about destroying my installation and 'starting over' but thanks to my experience from previous installations and good decisions made in planning I was able to get things running and transfered quite efficiently.

My default installation of banshee did not provide an option for importing CD tracks to MP3 format. This is a common requirement for converting CDs to digital audio for easy of access and transfer to portable devices.
