I’ve been looking for something to write about for sometime now. There is no sense in trying to force creativity so I have resigned myself to waiting for inspiration. It has arrived in the form of a seemingly routine bus trip to Krabi.
It’s just after five and I find myself sanding on a dusty roadside in Wiangsa, waiting for the frequent, yet unpredictable public bus. Suddenly it’s rumbling through the intersection and bearing down on me. I leap out at it, waving wildly. The heavy vehicle grinds to a halt and the door bursts open. An excited conductor leans out and motions me on board. I stagger up the steps, struggling with my pack and laptop. The bus is full to bursting, standing room only. I wedge myself in between an uncommonly fat Thai man and the woman balanced on the engine housing. The door wheezes closed as the driver revs the motor. Beside me the driver grapples with the controls, twitching like a man possessed. His eyes, behind silver sunglasses, are fixed on the busy road ahead, one lens still adorned with the eye-catching sticker announcing their UV rating.
As we pass through the numerous villages I count the passengers as they disembark. The number soon reaches forty-four and there’s another hundred still on board. I do a quick calculation as realize there are only forty seats to go around. Behind me I can hear a child retching. Outside the world slides to dusk as the sun sets beyond the bizarre limestone protrusions that are typical of this area. Palms stand in silhouette, a comforting outline of deceptive softness. High above, the moon looks down, its face an unfamiliar reflection.
